Tomato Taste Off Saturday
Learn, Taste, Vote!
Tomatoes, as well as a wealth of summer produce, are in abundance at our local farmers markets. Today at the Port Townsend Wednesday Farmers Market and this weekend at the Port Townsend Saturday and Chimacum Farmers Markets you can find around twenty varieties of locally grown tomatoes plus sweet corn, the first of the succulent melons, spicy and mild peppers, summer squash, garlic, as well as blueberries, strawberries, greens and more!
Have you ever found yourself stumped as to which tomatoes to bring home from the market? They are all so beautiful, juicy and tasty. Nothing beats a ripe, fresh, locally grown tomato! Well, the Tomato Taste Off is the event for you!
On Saturday we are hosting our third annual Tomato Taste Off at the Port Townsend Farmers Market. Jefferson Healthcare’s Executive Chef, Arran Stark, will tickle your taste buds and inspire you with a cooking demonstration featuring locally grown tomatoes as well as other seasonal produce.
Following Stark’s demo, farmers market volunteers will have about a dozen varieties of locally grown tomatoes prepped for you to taste at the market stage. You will be able to vote on your favorite tomatoes, choose for yourself which tomato varieties you like best for your summer meals as well as for preserving to enjoy this winter.
- All Day: Shop for tomatoes, summer bounty, and special tomato prepared food from our food vendors
- 9:30-11 am: Chef demo by Arran Stark
- 11am-12 pm: Taste and vote on your favorite tomatoes
- 12 pm: Award announcement
- 12:15 pm-1: 45 pm: Live music by Jonathan Doyle
From Our Vendors
Tarboo Creek Honey: We are presently extracting, bottling and labeling our 2018 harvest, and will be attending this weekends farmers market, August 25th. This year's harvest is mostly fireweed nectar with a maple nectar influence. Yummmm!!! ~Fern & Pat
It's hot so we don't want to heat our houses making big meals, and it's the TomatoTaste Off. This is the perfect week for BLTs and One Straw Ranch will have plenty of bacon in stock this weekend! Once you choose your favorite tomato at the Taste Off, pick up a tasty loaf of sourdough bread, a head of crunchy lettuce, and then stop by our booth for some delicious bacon. We'll have both regular bacon and jowl bacon. If all those scrumptious flavors aren't enough, try Mystery Bay chevre instead of the usual mayo. An easy hot weather summer feast!
Hopscotch Farm + Cannery will have lots of preserves today at the Port Townsend Wednesday Farmers Market: Wild Blackberry with Sage, Blueberry with Thyme, and (everyone's favorite) Strawberry Rhubarb with Ginger. Meghan will also have bell peppers, jalapeños, onions, potatoes, salad mix, plums, and more!
Red Dog Farm is bringing our first SWEET CORN to markets this weekend! Beautiful bi-color ears packed with sweet juiciness. We also have some sweet little cantaloupe melons, red sweet peppers, and, finally, strawberries by the flat! Enjoy the sweetness of summer!
