Berry season has truly arrived. This week find strawberries, raspberries, red and white currants as well as the first of the blueberries and marionberries at market. While many grocery stores have berries available even in the early spring, local berries stand out from their Californian and even more distant cousins, which are picked under-ripe or green so they can make the trip to the produce section. Local berries travel no more than 30 miles to make it to your farmers market. Taste the difference! Local berries are so juicy, sweet and full of flavor.
Mark your calendar for our 3rd annual Berries in Abundance day on July 28th at the Port Townsend Saturday Farmers Market. Jefferson Healthcare Executive Chef, Arran Stark, will demonstrate fun, new ways to bring out the berry in your summer cooking.
We are also hosting our first ever pie contest. Berry and berry mixed with other fruit pies are welcome from both home and professional chefs. Please include local berries and other farm-fresh ingredients, such as flour from Nash's Farm or your own rendered lard. Ask Charlotte at One Straw Ranch if you need pointers on rendering lard. Sign up today to participate. Fabulous prizes will be awarded to the winning pie makers. Prizes include a baking essentials basket from The Food Co-op, a farmers market Flora bag filled with goodies from our vendors and more!
Diamond Day Bouquet Joins the Market
Caitlin Carnahan, Diamond Day Bouquet, joins the Port Townsend SaturdayFarmers Market this week. You may have met Caitlin last season when she participated in our late season Port Townsend Wednesday Farmers Market with her beautiful bouquets. This season she will be joining us at the Port Townsend Saturday Farmers Market for the summer and fall months with cut flowers.

Diamond Day Bouquet grows a wide variety of specialty cut flowers chosen for uniqueness, beauty and vase life. Caitlin deeply believes in sustainable growing practices. She grows beautiful blooms without the use of herbicides or pesticides. Thoughtfully arranged bouquets are Caitlin's specialty. She will also have single variety bunches of seasonal flowers.
