Can you believe it? We only have three more Port Townsend Farmers Markets this season. While we have been lucky with a sunny fall, the short hours of daylight, night frosts, and wind are ushering in winter. This weekend through the end of the season many market farmers are offering bulk deals and large bags of root veggies for your pantry or any cool part of your house. This is the time to stock up on local produce, meat and holiday gifts.
In partnership with Jefferson Healthcare, Jefferson County Public Health, the 5210 Campaign and the Food Co-op, the Jefferson County Farmers Markets (JCFM) have been pleased to offer a fruit and vegetable prescription program (VegRx) this season. During this trial year, 12-month VegRx prescriptions have been offered by Jefferson Healthcare primary providers during annual well-child-checks to families that are experiencing food insecurity.
As the market season comes to a close, JCFM will be providing a three-month prescription to participating families. This prescription, sponsored by the Food Co-op, is good for fruit and vegetables at the Food Co-op in Port Townsend. If you receive VegRx, be sure to present your prescription at the Port Townsend Farmers Market info booth this weekend through our season closing. Market staff will give you a prescription good for $30 in fresh produce at the Food Co-op during the months of January through March, our farmers market off-season.
In this first year of the program, VegRx has been limited to families with children who are experiencing food insecurity. During the farmers market off-season we will evaluate the program. If resources allow, VegRx may expand in scope next year. Please contact Amanda Milholland with your questions or to make a donation towards healthy food for a health community.

With only three markets left, do you wonder how you will get tasty, local meat and eggs over the winter? Sign up for One Straw Ranch’s Winter Delivery email list. During January, February, and March we will be taking weekly pre-orders (via our webstore, phone, or email) and delivering them to Port Townsend on Sunday mornings. We’ll meet you next to the Food Co-op with a quick handoff of your pre-packed order so you can be on your way. A big Thank You to the Co-op for allowing us to use their space! Alternately, if you have about a cubic foot of freezer space free you might like to stock up before market is over with one of our 25 lb Farm Pack Boxes (Beef, Pork, or a Combo). Stop by the booth or check out our website for more details. www.onestrawranch.com
This is the last market of the season for SpringRain Farm. Farmer John needs a rest and we will go south to seek the sun. We will have chicken, rabbit, onions, and jam with us this Saturday if you want to stock up. Our farm stand will also have all of our items available seven days a week during daylight hours.
