Raspberries and currants from SpringRain Farm and Orchard made their debut at market on Wednesday. Finnriver Farm as well as SpringRain have the first of the cherry tomatoes while many of our local farmers are offering a delicious variety of crunchy cucumbers, tender carrots and summer squash. It is with gratitude that our farmers and patrons welcome these delicious summer crops after the long, cold and wet spring we experienced in Jefferson County.
A new shopper to market yesterday expressed great excitement for the wide variety of organic produce available at our markets. Coming from California, she said that while there are many farmers at her previous hometown market, only a couple of them were growing organically. Here in Jefferson County we have the fortune of a farming community committed to growing in environmentally and health conscious ways. The majority of our farm vendors are certified organic and several local farms also work hard to preserve salmon habitat through conservation easements with Jefferson Land Trust. While the average fresh food item on our grocery store shelves travels 1,500 miles to get there, we are fortunate to have nearly 30 local produce, meat and dairy farmers who bring sustainably grown and raised food to our markets nine months out of the year.
Market patrons, thank you for sharing your appreciation with our local farmers, artisan food makers and artists this season. Many of you have written letters of thanks and dropped them in the mailbox at our Port Townsend Farmers Markets. Thank you for sharing your gratitude with our vendors. It is a treat each week to learn about what keeps you coming back to market and to share your letters with our vendors. See you at the market~ Amanda Milholland

It's another great grilling weekend so One Straw Ranch's featured cut of the week is Lamb Chops! In addition to grilled, they can also be broiled, pan seared and finished in the oven, or cooked in a grill pan on the stove top. They are so tender and tasty we prefer them with the simple seasonings of salt and pepper, but they will also take your favorite marinade. Just cook them for a few minutes per side - you don't want to overcook them. Try some this weekend for 10% off!
