Happy New Year! The last day of the Port Townsend Saturday Farmers Market this season was December 17th. From all of the Jefferson County Farmers Market staff, Board of Directors, farmers and artisans, thank you for a wonderful, community-filled 24th season.
By shopping at the Port Townsend and Chimacum Farmers Markets in 2016, you invested in our local farmers, artisans and economy. Your patronage helped nearly 80 local farmers and artisans sell more that $1 million in sustainably produced food, arts, crafts, and services. Purchases made at our markets ripple out, boosting our local economy, supporting jobs, and strengthening our local food system. With your support, sales at our farmers markets rose 3% in 2016!
For our 25th anniversary in 2017, we will celebrate our local farmers and artisans as well as our markets with your love letters and more vendor bios. The 2017 market season will open on Saturday, April 1st from 9am to 2pm in uptown Port Townsend on Tyler St.. Beginning on opening day and continuing through the market season, we will collect your love letters written to local farms, honoring local berries, appreciating artisan pastries and coffee, and giving thanks to the creativity of local artists. At the market booth we will have a pen and paper for you to write your letters of appreciation and a mailbox for collection. You can choose to have us share some of your letter in our newsletter or for us to deliver it to one of our vendors. If you would like to share a love letter before market opening for our newsletter, please send me an email or pop it in your mailbox addressed to Jefferson County Farmers Markets, PO Box 1834, Port Townsend.
From all of our families to you and yours, thank you for shopping at our markets in 2016. We wish you a happy New Year and see you at the market for our 25th anniversary year! ~ Amanda Milholland
P.S. One of our vendors, La Crepe de Quimper, had some sales problems on December 17th. If you purchased a crepe from them with your credit or debit card, your transaction may not have gone through. They ended up loosing a couple hundred dollars in sales, a big loss for a small business. Please check your bank statement. Contact them if you got a free crepe: Coco and Olivier at email@example.com or 360-774-3204. Thank you!
In addition to being a dedicated shopper, please consider supporting our food assistance program and market operation with a tax-deductible donation in 2017.
GIMME5: Through our Gimme5 and Fresh Bucks food assistance matching programs, JCFM provided over $13,400 in food assistance matching dollars to nearly 400 low-income shoppers in 2016. With community support, we gave 10% more matching dollars for food from our local farms than ever before at our markets. Our Gimme5 and Fresh Bucks programs provide matching funds to low-income shoppers when they use their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT or Food Stamps) card or Women Infants and Children (WIC) and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition vouchers at the Port Townsend and Chimacum Farmers Markets. We provide matching funds for fresh, nutritious food from our local farms. While Fresh Bucks is funded by a small USDA grant, Gimme5 is supported entirely by our local community. Donations of $5 to $5,000 help us ensure that we have matching funds available each time low-income shoppers visit the market. Our thanks go out to the private donors that support this program as well as our 2016 Gimme5 sponsors: Jefferson Healthcare, United Good Neighbors, First Federal Community Foundation, the Port Townsend Food Coop and Pane d’Amore Artisan Bakery.
Please help us ensure that locally grown, healthy food is accessible to everyone in our community with a tax-deductible donation in 2017. Together, we will reach our goal of providing $15,000 in matching funds this year!
